The primary verbal operants identified by Skinner are:
Transcription: A verbal response controlled by a verbal stimulus (either spoken or written), where the response is written and there is point-to-point correspondence but not formal similarity. This is writing down what is heard or copying written text.
Mand: A verbal response that is controlled by a motivating operation (like a state of deprivation or a desire) and is reinforced by the specific consequence that reduces that motivation. Essentially, it’s a request or a demand (e.g., saying “water” because you are thirsty and someone gives you water).
Tact: A verbal response that is controlled by a non-verbal discriminative stimulus in the environment and is reinforced by generalized conditioned reinforcement (like praise or attention). It’s essentially labeling or naming something you perceive (e.g., seeing a dog and saying “dog”).
Intraverbal: A verbal response that is controlled by another verbal stimulus, and is reinforced by generalized conditioned reinforcement. There is no point-to-point correspondence between the stimulus and the response. This includes answering questions or engaging in conversation (e.g., someone says “Ready, set,…” and you say “…go!”).
Echoic: A verbal response that is controlled by a verbal stimulus and has point-to-point correspondence and formal similarity with that stimulus. It’s repeating what someone else said (e.g., someone says “cookie” and you say “cookie”).
Textual: A verbal response controlled by a written stimulus, where there is point-to-point correspondence but not formal similarity (it’s vocal behavior controlled by visual text). This is reading aloud (e.g., seeing the word “cat” written down and saying “cat”).

This domain is about how individuals connect and interact with others. It encompasses the essential social skills needed to engage effectively with peers and participate in shared activities. These skills develop along a progression, starting with simply noticing and engaging with others, moving towards imitating peers, initiating interactions and requests (mands) for things like turns or participation, and progressing to sustained cooperative play, understanding and responding to others’ requests, engaging in conversations, and even demonstrating empathy and negotiation skills. Therapists carefully observe and assess these behaviors in natural and structured settings to help individuals build meaningful connections and navigate their social world with increasing confidence and independence.

Daily living skills encompass the essential abilities required for an individual to manage their personal needs and navigate the fundamental routines of daily life with maximum independence. These skills are critical for maintaining physical health, ensuring personal safety, and fostering a sense of autonomy and self-reliance. They range from basic self-care tasks, such as personal hygiene, dressing, eating, and mobility, to more complex instrumental activities that enable independent living within a community.
Proficiency in daily living skills significantly impacts an individual’s quality of life and their ability to participate meaningfully in various environments, including home, school, work, and the community. The specific skills targeted for instruction and assessment are always individualized, taking into account the person’s age, abilities, and the demands of their current and future environments.

Challenging behaviors are actions that interfere with an individual’s learning, social interactions, or overall well-being, or the well-being of others. These behaviors can manifest in various forms, including aggression, self-injury, property destruction, non-compliance, tantrums, and repetitive or stereotyped actions that impede engagement in meaningful activities. What constitutes a “challenging” behavior is often context-dependent and influenced by the intensity, frequency, duration, and the specific environment in which it occurs.

Motor development refers to the progression of physical abilities that involve movement and coordination of the body. It encompasses the development of both gross motor skills, which involve large muscle movements like walking, running, and jumping, and fine motor skills, which involve smaller muscle movements, such as grasping, manipulating objects, and writing. This development follows a generally predictable sequence, with foundational skills building upon each other as an individual matures.
Several factors influence motor development, including biological maturation, environmental opportunities, and practice. While there are typical ranges for achieving certain motor milestones, individual rates of development can vary. Understanding motor development is important in identifying potential delays or challenges and in creating appropriate activities and supports to foster physical competence and independence across the lifespan.
